Our Journey

The story behind the turn of every evening

From hospitality floors to a room of our own

A bistro born from Australian service culture

Our story begins in the heart of Australia’s vibrant hospitality scene. Years spent on dining floors, behind bars, and in open kitchens shaped a simple conviction: evenings should feel unhurried, honest, and quietly memorable.

Out of that conviction, The Turn & Table was founded as a single, physical venue that folds together the elements we love most: gourmet regional cuisine, craft-led drinks, and a relaxed corner for friends to gather around a real table of cards.

Every service is guided by a commitment to attentiveness rather than spectacle. There are no screens demanding attention, only warm light, considered music, and a team intent on reading the room as carefully as they season a dish.

Founded on Australian soil — dedicated to the slow rhythm of the evening.

The Venue

A heritage corner with a quiet glow

Nestled inside a beautifully restored heritage corner, The Turn & Table draws on deep emerald tones, raw timber details, and carefully balanced lighting to create a room that feels both refined and familiar.

The layout is deliberately spacious: generous banquettes for long dinners, intimate two-seaters along the wall for quieter conversations, and a softly lit bar where regulars greet each other by name.

Whether it is a quiet midweek supper, a pre-theatre drink, or a lively Saturday gathering, the room adjusts around the rhythm of the guests. The aim is always the same — a sense of ease, privacy, and understated occasion.

Kitchen & Bar

Modern Australian plates, poured with intention

The Kitchen

Led by Chef Lucas Bain

In our open kitchen, Chef Lucas Bain and the team work with a simple rule: start with the region and build from there. Menus move with the Australian seasons, spotlighting growers, fishers, and producers whose work we know and respect.

Dishes pair bold flavours with contemporary technique — charcoal-kissed proteins, thoughtfully layered vegetables, and sauces that have been slowly coaxed into depth over time. The result is modern Australian dining that feels generous, grounded, and distinctly of this place.

Each plate is designed to sit comfortably alongside our drinks program, encouraging guests to graze, share, or commit to a full, lingering dinner.

Our Drinks Philosophy

Craft mixology & considered pairings

Behind the bar, our team approaches every pour with equal parts curiosity and discipline. The backbar highlights international spirits, rare vermouths, and a rotating collection of Australian producers we admire.

Signature cocktails are built around structure and balance — bright acidity, measured bitterness, and subtle aromatics that echo what is coming out of the kitchen. House spritzes, stirred-down classics, and zero-alcohol options are treated with the same care.

An extensive wine list rounds out the offering, with a focus on food-friendly styles, thoughtful cellaring, and a handful of special bottles for those looking to mark an occasion.

The Card Salon

A tucked-away room for real tables and real company

Hidden just beyond a line of velvet drapes lies our private card room — a quiet, softly lit salon dedicated to face-to-face play and relaxed weekend ritual.

Here, the rhythm is intentionally analogue: real cards, real chips, the rustle of shuffling decks, and the low hum of conversation between friends and regulars. It is a space for spirited weekend matches, laughter, and friendly tradition, entirely separate from the digital world.

The card salon operates as an extension of the bistro and bar, with tailored drinks service, share plates, and the option to reserve tables for private groups seeking a discreet, convivial setting.

People & Principles

The team, and the values, behind every service

Meet the Team

A small crew with a shared sense of care

Our close-knit crew brings together experienced hosts, bartenders, and chefs who share a belief in quietly attentive service. Many have worked side-by-side across Australia’s dining rooms and bars before finding a permanent home at The Turn & Table.

On any given evening you will find them greeting regulars by name, recalling favourite pairings, and guiding first-time guests through the menu with relaxed confidence. Their aim is not to rush you through the night, but to give each table the time and attention it deserves.

Training focuses on knowledge, empathy, and detail — from how we speak about provenance to the way a dish is placed on the table.

Our Values

How we choose to operate

Every decision in the venue — from sourcing and menu design to the way we light the room — is anchored in a set of values we return to nightly.

  • Honest sourcing

We favour producers, growers, and makers whose work we can trace, and we are transparent with guests about what is on the plate and in the glass.

  • Thoughtful preparation

Stocks, syrups, infusions, and key elements are made in-house wherever possible, allowing us to control quality and minimise waste.

  • Sustainable practice

From seasonal menu planning to considered waste management, sustainability informs how we run the kitchen, bar, and card salon.

  • Conviviality

Above all, we exist to foster a convivial environment — a place where guests feel looked after, welcome to stay, and eager to return.
